On August 10, Marcus and Markieff Morris and their Family Over Everything Foundation hosted their 5th Annual Backpack Giveaway at Hunting Park Recreation Center in North Philadelphia, a place where the brothers spent much of their time as youth.
“I grew up across the street on Jerome Street,” Markieff said. “I’ve been around here my whole life and just want to give back to the kids around here.”
During the event, volunteers distributed 500 backpacks filled with school supplies to students in grades K-12. The event also featured haircuts from Bionic Barber, popsicles from Whimsicle Gourmet Fruit Pops, and physicals from local healthcare providers—all free of charge for attendees. In addition, the event’s raffle sent several youth home with new bicycles from SE Bikes and memorabilia signed by the Morris brothers, including Marcus’ New York Knicks jersey and Marcus’ Detroit Pistons jersey.
Despite a busy summer facing free agency decisions and relocating to new cities, the Morris’ made it a priority to give back to their home city this offseason, with the Backpack Giveaway serving as just one of several events they held this summer as part of their FOE Foundation Summer Series.
In July, Marcus and Markieff and FOE Foundation hosted their annual youth basketball camp, Men’s Summit, and Celebrity Softball Game. This Saturday, August 17, FOE Foundation will host its final event of its Summer Series—the organization’s fourth annual backpack giveaway in Washington, D.C., where Markieff played with the Wizards from 2016 until earlier this year.
