On November 15, Marcus and Markieff Morris’ Family Over Everything Foundation hosted their first annual turkey giveaway at the Hank Gathers Youth Access Center in North Philadelphia, with 300 local residents in need taking home Thanksgiving turkeys along with uncooked side dishes donated by event sponsor Mills & Edwards, LLP.
Despite the season’s first snowstorm threatening to derail the event, the foundation proceeded as planned, recognizing the great need among local community members. Within an hour-and-a-half of the three hours allotted for the “first come, first served” giveaway, the foundation had distributed all 300 turkeys and side dishes to community members of all ages, from families with babies to senior citizens.
“The weather is atrocious but we made it through. It went smoothly, and it seemed that the neighborhood people were very happy. The Family Over Everything Foundation is always happy to be able to give back to the community,” stated Thomasine Morris, co-founder of the foundation and mother of Marcus and Markieff.
Born and raised in low-income neighborhoods in Philadelphia, the Morris brothers and their family know the overwhelming struggles of poverty, particularly around the holidays. Passionate about giving back to underserved urban communities, primarily in Philadelphia and in Marcus’ and Markieff’s NBA team cities, the Family Over Everything Foundation was glad to help make Thanksgiving a little brighter for families in their hometown this year.
The foundation’s holiday outreach does not stop with the turkey giveaway though. In December, the foundation will “adopt” a Philadelphia women’s shelter for the day, during which staff and volunteers will provide a catered holiday dinner and lead other activities to spread holiday cheer, including a visit from Santa who will present toys to children staying at the shelter.
