NBA superstar LeBron James recently announced a partnership with Walmart on their "Fight Hunger. Spark Change." campaign to raise awareness and funds for those facing hunger in communities across the U.S. Through the partnership, the LeBron James Family Foundation and Walmart are helping to provide food and other essentials to families in need.
"Growing up in Akron, the whole city supported my dreams, supported my friends' dreams. Gave us shelter. Gave us food. We always felt like we had that support,” James said. “Partnering with Walmart is about the commitment to the community. Walmart has done so many great things all over the world, but, it starts in their hometown of Bentonville, Arkansas—the same as me starting in my hometown of Akron, Ohio. We don’t forget where we come from.”
One in eight Americans — 41 million people, including 13 million children — experiences hunger on a regular basis. Over the last five years, Walmart has raised over $101 million through sales of participating purchases from brands like Campbell's Soup and General Mills to support nonprofit organization Feeding America. Through the “Fight Hunger. Spark Change.” initiative, Walmart recently surpassed 1 billion meals provided to those in need — numbers that have only accelerated with James' help.
In return for James’ support in promoting the campaign, Walmart will provide a pantry full of fresh and frozen foods, toiletries and other basic necessities to the I PROMISE School, a public elementary school launched by James last year in his hometown of Akron, Ohio. James will also participate in Walmart’s Back to School campaign this summer to provide students and families the educational tools they need for success in the classroom.
"What we hope to accomplish together with LeBron is to magnify each other's efforts," Walmart CEO Doug McMillon stated in regard to their partnership. "We would love to help this model that he's creating lead to a situation where it could help even more people."
A notable activist, the Los Angeles Lakers star continues to dedicate himself to making a difference and empowering communities in need by fighting hunger, investing in education and ultimately helping people better their lives.
